After Black & Veatch Corp. (a global engineering, consulting
and construction company) underwent an extended period
of growth and hiring, human resources (HR) leaders knew
that new hires were not being successfully integrated: More
than half of all employees had been with the company five
years or less, and the voluntary turnover rate for new hires
was above historical levels.
Several modifications to the new employee orientation
(NEO) program had been made in recent years, but the
results were disappointing.
The Six Sigma group helped, first gathering voice-of-the customer (VOC) data then recommending a Kaizen event structured on the DMAIC model.

Kaizen
The requirements for a successful Kaizen event are:• The team can commit to the time needed – up to a full week.
• The process owner is committed to participating in the event and implementing the solutions.
• The problem or opportunity is well-defined. • Data is available or easily collected.
Using a Kaizen approach can have these benefits:
• Quick results
• Increased participation of employees
• Momentum for change
• Only one face-to-face meeting (beneficial for geographically dispersed team members)
• An alternative to DMAIC projects for improving Processes
For an introduction to Kaizen principles, applied through a hands-on Kaizen Event Simulation Case Study, see the Kaizen Workshop E-book.
